Before We Even Ask

Lessons from serving in East Tennessee

Last month I (Nicole) had the privilege of going to East Tennessee to help with Hurricane Helene relief efforts. Some people lost everything they owned, and only cinder blocks remained of what once was their house. Communities were completely cut off from the outside world by roads being washed out. There were so many needs, from construction to medical to simply being someone’s listening ear.

Selfishly, my fear was that the devastation might be too much for me to bear. Upon arrival to the area we were serving, my fear was met with the goodness of God. At the base for the volunteers the Holy Spirit was palpable. God was for these people and their mission. Big prayers were answered daily. Equipment and supplies would show up within hours of being prayed for. When it arrived, we would learn that it had started the journey to our destination long before the prayer had been spoken.

Isaiah 65:24 says “I will answer them before they call to me.

While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers!”

God knew what the people in East Tennessee needed before they did. He knows the desires of our hearts. We can see his light shine brightest in the darkest of hours. My prayer is that those in

their darkest hour would awaken to the love that Jesus Christ has to offer them, that they would become familiar with his restful presence and know that He is good.
